Meta is collaborating with Google to combat misinformation on WhatsApp . A reverse image search feature is under test for WhatsApp on Android and is now reportedly in beta testing for the WhatsApp web client. This feature seeks to assist users in verifying images and giving more context regarding their credibility.
Reverse Image Search: How It Works
Reverse image search allows uploading a picture from Google via WhatsApp for the purpose of checking whether a particular image exists on the web. This helps find out if an image has been tampered with or altered in any way. As reported by WABetaInfo, the images that users will upload for searching will be processed by Google and not be accessible to WhatsApp.
Reverse Image Search: Testing on Android and Web Clients
The 'Search on Web' feature for the Android app is under testing. This function is beta, and through the three-dot menu on the image viewer, it is accessible. There is a similar function also under development in the web version of WhatsApp that is intended to allow cross-platform verification in one consistent manner.
Reverse Image Search: Trust with Users
By incorporating reverse image search, WhatsApp will enable users to find out what is true and what is not so that they can make better choices about the content they share. This partnership with Google highlights Meta's efforts to combat the spread of misinformation on its platform.
Reverse Image Search: Access Via WhatsApp
The new feature streamlines the reverse image search by directly including it within WhatsApp. Unlike Google's existing reverse image search, users no longer have to download an image and upload it again via a different app or browser. Instead, the search option is directly integrated into WhatsApp, making it faster and more user-friendly.
Reverse Image Search: Expected Availability
Although Meta did not say anything about releasing the feature, it would be shortly rolled out both for Android and WhatsApp Web. Thus, image verification shall be seamless with the interface, aiming to make it available to most users for greater effectiveness against misinformation.
