Home Minister Amit Shah, on Tuesday, slammed the Congress party for amending the Constitution of India for its selfish gains. Speaking in the Lok Sabha during the debate on the Indian Constitution in the ongoing Winter Session of the Parliament, Shah listed the number of times the Congress party made Constitutional amendments in the country for its gains.

‘Kia Hai Toh Sunna Padega…’ - HM Amit Shah Tells Kharge

Shah said that the Congress party made 77 Constitutional amendments during its rule against BJP's 22 amendments. Shah said that in the first Constitutional amendment in 1951, Pt Jawaharlal Nehru curtailed the Freedom of Expression by amending Article 19A of the Constitution of India.

He also went on to list Indira Gandhi's move to impose the Emergency and the decision to ‘gift’ Katchatheevu island ‘to Sri Lanka’ without making the necessary amendments in the Indian Constitution.

When Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge objected to Shah's charges, the Home Minister hit back at Kharge and said ‘Kia hai toh sunna padega (You've done it, so you will have to listen)'.

Congress' Constitutional Amendments: What HM Shah Said In Lok Sabha

  • “...The first amendment was made on June 18, 1951... After the formation of the Constitution, Congress did not have enough patience to wait for the Lok Sabha elections before going to power... Article 19 A was added to curtail the freedom of speech... And Jawahar Lal Nehru was the Prime Minister at that time…,” Shah said.
  •  "...The first amendment was to curtail the freedom of expression by Former PM Jawahar Lal Nehru. The 24th Amendment was brought by his daughter Indira Gandhi. On November 24, 1971, the Parliament was given the right to reduce the fundamental rights of the citizens..." Shah said.
  • “...The 49th Amendment in the Constitution crossed all the limits. On August 10, 1975, was a black day. Indira Gandhi's elections were declared null and void by the Allahabad High Court. Today, they lose and blame the EVM. The SC has rejected the plea against the EVM 24 times. The EC kept the EVM from 10 am to 5 pm for 3 days open for anyone to prove if it could be hacked. No one came... They lost Maharashtra and won in Jharkhand on the same day. The people of Maharashtra punished them for their lies... On the same day, EVM was blamed in Maharashtra and they prepared themselves for the swearing-in ceremony in Jharkhand... Indira Gandhi's elections were declared null and void by the Allahabad High Court. So she prohibited the judicial inquiry of a prime minister through amendment... I want to ask my Communist brothers to introspect on whom are they sitting…,” he added.

Shah said that the BJP, on the other hand, changed the Constitution for the welfare of the nation. Shah said that the BJP brought GST, Constitutional Status for the National Commission of Backward Class and a 10 per cent quota for the poorest of poor families through constitutional amendments.
