India Makes History: ISRO Successfully Completes Space Docking Experiment

India's space exploration capabilities have reached a new frontier, with ISRO successfully completing the docking of two satellites as part of its ambitious Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX).

This breakthrough positions India as the fourth country in the world to achieve in-space satellite docking, a crucial step for complex space missions.

The announcement, made on the social media platform X, highlighted the precision and expertise involved in the docking process:

"SpaDeX Docking Update: 🌟Docking Success Spacecraft docking successfully completed! A historic moment.
Let’s walk through the SpaDeX docking process: Manoeuvre from 15m to 3m hold point completed. Docking initiated with precision, leading to successful spacecraft capture. Retraction completed smoothly, followed by rigidisation for stability. Docking successfully completed.
India became the 4th country to achieve successful Space Docking. Congratulations to the entire team! Congratulations to India!”
 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to applaud the successful demonstration of satellite docking by ISRO, calling it a "significant stepping stone" for India's future space missions. He congratulated the scientists and the entire space fraternity, showcasing pride in the nation's advancements in space technology.

His post reads, “ 'Congratulations to our scientists at  @isro and the entire space fraternity for the successful demonstration of space docking of satellites. It is a significant stepping stone for India’s ambitious space missions in the years to come.”

 

From Trials to Triumph
The milestone comes after a January 12 trial, where ISRO brought the satellites—SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target)—within three meters of each other before retreating to analyze data for the final docking maneuver. Earlier attempts on January 7 and 9 were postponed for additional calibration.

Launched on December 30, 2024, aboard the PSLV C60 rocket, the two satellites, weighing approximately 220 kg each, were placed in a 475-kilometer circular orbit. The rocket also carried 24 other payloads.
