Data Protection, Deepfakes: 'No Need To Change Law' Says MeitY Secy

S Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, recently called for more vigilance on behalf of social media companies and said that these companies should take down inappropriate content such as 'deepfakes'. Speaking at a FCCI event, Krishnan said that the current legal framework does not need to be changed in order to curb wrongful data practices.

"There is ample protection available for user privacy. There is a requirement for social media companies to exercise due diligence on the content they put. If there are deepfakes, social media channels are required to take them down. There is no need to change the law for this," Said Krishnan.
Speaking about the future of Artificial Intelligence and cybersecurity at the curtain raiser of FICCI’s Annual Convention & 97th Annual General Meeting, Krishnan said that the demand for FDI is high in AI and cybersecurity. “On the electronic side, demand is strong. PLI (Production Linked Incentive) Schemes have kicked in.” He added, “The FDI pipeline continues to grow strong, and we constantly have inquiries.” He also spoke about semiconductors and said the field needs to expand so players can join.
Eyes set on PM's $500 bn export target - Krishnan
Addressing India's export market, he said, “We have a $500 bn export target for electronics set by the PM.” The agenda is to make India a hub for electronics in manufacturing and exports. “We want to become a trillion-dollar digital economy by the end of the decade,” said Krishnan.
