Commuters using Bengaluru's Namma Metro may soon face higher travel costs, as the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) considers a fare revision for its metro services. The Fare Fixation Committee (FFC), tasked with reviewing the fare structure, is expected to submit its recommendations to the state government soon.
The FFC had earlier invited public feedback on the proposed fare hike, according to reports.
Expected Fare Hike
If approved, metro ticket prices could increase by 10–15 per cent.
Current Fare Structure
Currently, metro fares in Bengaluru range from a minimum of Rs 10 to a maximum of Rs 60. Commuters using smartcards receive a 5 per cent discount on these fares.
Fare Review Panel
The three-member committee reviewing the fares is led by Justice R. Tharani, a retired judge of the Madras High Court. Other members include Satyendra Pal Singh, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and E V Ramana Reddy, former Additional Chief Secretary of Karnataka.
Last Fare Revision in 2017
The last fare revision was implemented in 2017. Since then, Namma Metro’s ridership has steadily increased, particularly with the expansion of its network. The Purple Line, which connects key areas in East Bengaluru, has emerged as a vital transport link for the city’s IT workforce.
Commuters are now waiting for the government’s decision on the proposed fare hike, which could impact daily travel budgets for thousands in the city.
