Assam trading scam: Assamese actress and choreographer Sumi Borah, along with her husband Tarkik Borah, have turned themselves in to the police regarding their involvement in a massive Rs 2,200 crore stock trading scam in Assam. This comes after authorities issued a look-out notice for the couple.
Prior to their surrender, Sumi Borah, who also has a notable social media presence, shared a video expressing her frustration over what she termed a "media trial." She clarified that she had not been evading arrest but had been in hiding.
In her video statement, Borah refuted the majority of the allegations, claiming that "not even 10%" of the accusations are true. She revealed that her silence stemmed from feeling harassed and unprepared to address the situation. However, she stressed her readiness to assist the police in the investigation.
The couple surrendered to the Dibrugarh Police after evading capture for 10 days. Reports indicate that Sumi Borah's brother, Rajib Borah, and sister-in-law had also been avoiding arrest, reportedly hiding in Teok, Jorhat.
Investigations reveal that Sumi Borah allegedly received Rs 20 crore from Bishal Phukan, the alleged mastermind behind the scam, who also reportedly financed the couple's wedding in Rajasthan last year and spent lavishly on them.
What is the Rs 2,200 crore trading scam?
The Assam online trading scam, led by Bishal Phukan, enticed investors with promises of a 30% return within two months. Phukan, along with several accomplices including the Borahs, Swapnanil Das, Ranjit Kakati, and Hemen Rabha, leveraged their social media influence and extravagant lifestyles to deceive over 1,500 investors. They attracted potential clients through lavish parties and ties to the Assamese film industry.
Phukan was apprehended earlier this month following a police raid at his residence in Dibrugarh.
