UAE flights cancelled: Rising tensions in the Middle East have created air travel chaos, with the Emirates cancelling all flights to Iran, Iraq, and Jordan on Thursday due to ‘regional unrest’ after Iran attacked Israel on Tuesday.
“Emirates is cancelling all flights to/from Iraq (Basra and Baghdad), Iran (Tehran), and Jordan (Amman) on 4th and 5th October due to regional unrest,” the airline informed.
According to the data from FlightRadar24, other global global airlines are also diverting or cancelling flights with regional airports including Lebanon, Israel and Kuwait, showing long delays.
Previously, Iran has also announced a complete ban on flights after the missile strike on Israel, however, after a brief suspension, flights had resumed.
With the concerns mounting over air travel, the shares of the travel and airline companies in Europe recorded steep declines. The shares of Europe's largest travel operator TUI fell nearly 5 per cent on the day and Lufthansa tumbled down nearly 4.4 per cent.
"At the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict and the Israel-Gaza conflict last year there was a weakening of demand for travel across the board in Europe, which eased after a couple of weeks," said Andrew Lobbenberg, an analyst at Barclays told Reuters.
Iran launched its largest missile attack against Israel on Tuesday in retaliation for Israel's campaign against Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon, prompting a threat from Israel of a "painful response".
"All planes - mainly flights to India – are avoiding Iranian airspace until further notice," a LOT spokesperson told Reuters.
