Busboy to tech titan: The 61-year-old tech billionaire is one of the prime examples of hard work and dedication in today's world. Long before he completed his Master of Science - Electrical Engineering (MSEE) from Stanford University, he was busy scrubbing dishes and waiting tables at the American table service diner-style restaurant chain Denny's for 5 years.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has listed only two experiences on his LinkedIn profile, one of which is as a "dishwasher, busboy, waiter" at Denny's from 1978 to 1983. Huang has repeatedly set forth the case that those early jobs were pivotal in forming his work ethic and the personal code of conduct.
"No task is beneath me," he pointed out in a Stanford Graduate School of Business interview in March. "I used to clean toilets. I’ve cleaned more toilets than all of you combined." The humility faced by Huang and his readiness to get his hands dirty are the core reasons for the huge respect that he received and relishes in the field.
Huang is now the 12th richest person in the world, with a net worth of $112 billion as verified by the Bloomberg Billionaire Index. His company, Nvidia, which was founded in 1993, has become a pioneer in technology and registered a growth rate of more than 3,776 percent since 2019.
This is due to the increased demand for artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. However, the rapid expansion and advancement in technologies that resulted in this promotion were not without its drawbacks. Multiple employees at Nvidia have shared their experience that they work under severe stress, which has even included seven-day weeks and late nights.
Although the company offers significant compensation packages that help to retain talent, the work culture remains tough. Resigned workers would often mention a workplace where meetings are frequent and intense, and raised voices are sometimes part of the working environment.
