‘Was a privilege to associate with him,’ Infosys co-founder Nilekani remembers Tata

Nandan Nilekani’s tribute to Ratan Tata: Billionaire Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys , on Monday paid tribute to the late Chairman of Tata Trusts, Ratan Tata, recalling their first meeting in 2001 during Tata's visit to the Infosys headquarters in Bengaluru.
Tata, chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, passed away on October 9 at the age of 86.
Nilekani shared his memories on X, describing Tata’s humility, grace, and generosity during their first encounter.
“I first met Ratan Tata on his visit to @ Infosys in 2001 . I was struck by his humility, grace and generosity. Many years later he invited me to cofound @AvantiFinance a Financial Inclusion platform for the next 100 million unserved and underserved households. It was a pleasure and privilege to associate with him! Farewell Ratan,” wrote Nilekani.
Infosys co-founder was responding to an official tweet from Infosys that paid tribute to Tata. In the video created by Infosys in honour of the late industrialist, featured images of Tata with Infosys co-founders Narayana Murthy and Mohandas Pai. The video included a photo of the visitor’s book at Infosys, where Tata had described his experience in 2001 as "A wonderful and invigorating experience. The sight of the new India."
In the tribute, Infosys shared that Tata had planted a Tabebuia Rosea tree during his visit, which has since grown into a symbol of shared purpose and vision between the two corporations.
"His legacy continues to inspire us to pursue growth and innovation, moving the world forward together," Infosys stated.
Narayana Murthy also paid his respects on October 10, calling Tata a "dear friend" and his role model. Tata passed away at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital on the night of October 9, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Indian business and philanthropy.
