Wayanad landslide 2024: Kerala’s Wayanad district has been hit hard by a series of devastating landslides that struck in the early hours of Tuesday, leading to significant casualties and disruption. The latest updates reveal a grim situation with 93 confirmed deaths and around 128 individuals injured as a result of this natural calamity.
Rescue and Relief Operations
In response to the disaster, extensive rescue and relief operations have been mobilised. The Indian Armed Forces have been quick to act, with 300 military personnel initially deployed. Additional support has been provided by Army, Naval teams, and Air Force helicopters, all working in coordination to aid the affected areas. Heavy engineering equipment and rescue dog teams have been airlifted from Trivandrum, Bengaluru, and Delhi to assist in the ongoing efforts.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has been actively overseeing the operations, ensuring that the necessary resources are directed to Wayanad. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has also been instrumental in the relief efforts. Their disaster relief teams have been dispatched to the affected areas, equipped with essential materials such as rubber inflatable boats, diesel-driven pumps, life jackets, raincoats, gum boots, and earth-clearing implements.
The ICG's efforts include the distribution of food, drinking water, and other crucial supplies, working closely with local authorities to coordinate efficient aid delivery.
Tourists Affected
The landslides have also impacted tourists visiting the region. Four North Indian tourists who had traveled to Wayanad for its scenic beauty have been caught in the disaster. Two of the tourists are reported missing, while the other two have been rescued and are currently receiving medical treatment. The group had visited Coimbatore and Coorg before arriving in Wayanad. The driver of their vehicle has been located and provided assistance, but the fate of the missing tourists remains uncertain.
The private taxi company involved, Plus Cabs, confirmed that the vehicle carrying the tourists was trapped in the landslide. While the two women who were rescued are receiving treatment—one in the ICU and the other in stable condition—the search continues for the two missing individuals whose mobile phones are currently unreachable.
Government Response and Updates
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy and is closely monitoring the relief efforts. The state government is working in conjunction with national agencies to provide support and facilitate rescue operations. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing assessments of the damage and needs of the affected population.
The massive landslides have left behind a trail of destruction, with substantial damage to infrastructure and homes. The focus now is on ensuring that all affected individuals receive prompt and effective aid, and that the search and rescue operations are carried out with the utmost urgency.
