Uttarakhand Cabinet Approves UCC Manual - Top Developments

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Uttarakhand's cabinet convened on Monday at the State Secretariat to approve the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) manual.

The legislative Department had previously reviewed the manual, ensuring its thorough scrutiny before approval, according to ANI.


Addressing the media post-cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Dhami reaffirmed the government's commitment to fulfilling electoral promises made in 2022. "We had promised the people of Uttarakhand in 2022 that we would bring the UCC Bill as soon as our government was formed. We brought it. The draft committee drafted it, it was passed, the President approved it and it became an act. The process of training is also almost complete. After analysing everything, we will announce the dates soon," ANI reported Dhami as saying. He also mentioned that the dates for implementation will soon be announced after analyzing the final preparations.

Legislative Journey
The UCC Bill was introduced during a special session of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly on February 6 and passed with a comfortable majority on February 7, as per ANI. President Droupadi Murmu signed the bill into law on March 13, positioning Uttarakhand potentially as the first state in India to implement a Uniform Civil Code.

Uniform Civil Code Objective
The Uniform Civil Code aims to establish uniform personal laws encompassing marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession, applicable to all citizens irrespective of religion, gender, or caste.

This legislative move marks a significant step towards standardizing legal frameworks in Uttarakhand, awaiting the finalization of implementation dates to initiate the new regime.
