UN Peacebuilding Commission Re-Elects India

Since India's current term on the Commission was expiring on December, India has been re-elected to the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission for 2025 to 2026.

An announcement made in a post on X by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations said, "India has been re-elected to the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for 2025-2026. As a founding member and major contributor to @UNPeacekeeping, India is committed to continuing its engagement with the PBC to work towards global peace and stability."

What Does The Peacebuilding Commission Do?

The Peacebuilding Commission, which is an intergovernmental advisory body, supports peace efforts in conflict-ridden areas and countries and enables the broader peace agenda at an international level.

The Commission is also composed of 31 Member States, that are elected from the General Assembly, the Security Council, and the Economic and Social Council. the top financial contributing countries as well as the top troop-contributing countries to the UN system are also members.

India has been a member of the PBC ever since it started in December 2005.

The Commission aims to promote an integrated, strategic and coherent approach to peacebuilding. It also acts as a bridge between the principal organs and relevant UN entities by convening all relevant actors within and outside UN nations and sharing peacebuilding advice.

Where Does India Stand In The PBC?

India is one of the largest contributors of uniformed personnel to UN Peacekeeping and currently deploys around 6,000 military and police personnel to UN operations in Abyei, the Central African Republic, the Cyprus, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lebanon, the Middle East, Somalia, South Sudan and Western Sahara.

As many as 180 Indian peacekeepers have made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, the highest number so far from any troop-contributing country.
