The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on October 1, 2024 formally sent a 'Letter of Intent' to the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Future Host Commission expressing India's interest in hosting the Olympics and Paralympics Games in 2036.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed intent to host the 2036 Olympic Games last year in a public address at the Nassau Coliseum in New York. With six medals in its tally at the recently concluded Paris Olympics, India is willing to make efforts in order to host these large sporting events.
There are other contenders for hosting the prestigious games, with confirmed bids coming from Nusantara in Indonesia, who filed for the 2036 bid immediately after losing out on 2032 bid; Istanbul, Turkey, who started their bid to host in 2021; and Santiago, Chile who confirmed their bid soon after the 2023 Pan American Games.
In order to host the games, India will have to secure a majority vote of the members of IOC. All active member countries are allotted one vote each. The member has to refrain from voting if the election concerns a country of which they are a citizen. The entire process is organised by the Future Host Commission. India is yet to host the Olympic games.
