On January 20, 2025, President-elect Donald Trump will take the oath of office to begin his second term as president. The inauguration marks a crucial moment in American democracy, as the transition of power from the Biden administration to Trump’s administration takes place.
The 20th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution dictates that the president’s four-year term ends precisely at noon, with the president-elect being sworn in shortly thereafter.
Led by Sen. Amy Klobuchar, the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies has meticulously planned the day’s schedule. The events will follow a detailed timeline, with a focus on national unity, democracy, and the peaceful transfer of power.
A Relocation Due to Weather
Although originally planned for the West Front of the U.S. Capitol, the inauguration ceremony will take place indoors in the Capitol Rotunda due to expected cold temperatures in Washington. This last-minute venue change ensures a more comfortable setting for participants and attendees.
Timeline of Events on Inauguration Day
The inaugural ceremonies are expected to kick off at approximately 11:30 a.m. ET with a musical prelude performed by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Combined Choirs, followed by "The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band. At this point, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, chair of the Joint Congressional Committee, will officially call the proceedings to order.
The invocation will be delivered by Timothy Cardinal Dolan, the archbishop of New York, and the Rev. Franklin Graham, providing spiritual reflection as the day’s events begin.
Following the invocation, Christopher Macchio, an opera singer known as America’s Tenor, will perform the song “Oh, America!” before the vice-presidential oath of office is administered by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh to JD Vance, Trump’s nominee for vice president.
Inaugural Performances and Oaths
Country singer Carrie Underwood will be joined by the Armed Forces Chorus and the U.S. Naval Academy Glee Club to perform “America the Beautiful.” Shortly afterward, Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the presidential oath to Donald Trump.
Afterward, the Naval Academy Glee Club will sing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and President Trump will deliver his inaugural address, setting the tone for his second term.
Concluding the Ceremony
The ceremony will conclude with a benediction, delivered by a diverse group of religious leaders, including Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman of Yeshiva University, Imam Husham Al-Husainy of the Karbalaa Islamic Education Center, Pastor Lorenzo Sewell of 180 Church Detroit, and Rev. Father Frank Mann from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn.
Finally, the National Anthem will be performed by Christopher Macchio, marking the end of the formal ceremony.
Inaugural Luncheon and Parade
Following the ceremony, there will be an inaugural luncheon, followed by a pass in review, where the president and vice president will review military troops. The day will culminate with the presidential parade, a traditional event where Trump and his vice president will be celebrated by the public.
As with all inaugurations, the events will showcase the United States’ commitment to democracy, showcasing the peaceful transfer of power and the continuity of leadership. Despite the weather challenges, the 2025 inauguration will be a memorable and historic occasion, setting the stage for the next four years of the Trump administration.
