The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has surpassed 11 crore unique investor registrations, with 1 crore new investors joining in just five months. Over the past five years, the pace of investor registrations has escalated sharply, with a 3.6-fold increase. When the NSE first began operations in 1994, it took 14 years to reach 1 crore investors.
Since then, the growth has accelerated, with the next 1 crore registrations taking approximately seven years, followed by a 3.5-year gap, and a rapid increase for subsequent milestones, including the latest 1 crore investors added in under five months.
The growth in investor numbers has been steady, with daily registrations of new investors consistently ranging from 47,000 to 73,000 over the last five months. Key factors contributing to this uptick include digitisation, better investor education, government-backed financial inclusion initiatives, and a strong stock market performance. In 2024, the Nifty 50 index saw an 8.8% return, while the Nifty 500 index posted a 15.2% gain, with Indian markets continuing their positive trajectory for the ninth consecutive year.
Surge in investor confidence
According to Sriram Krishnan, Chief Business Development Officer at NSE, this surge shows the growing trust and confidence of the Indian public in the stock market. "This swift rise, with over 1 crore investors added since August, underscores the Indian population’s increasing belief in equity investments as a viable method for wealth creation," he stated.
As of now, the total number of registered client accounts with the NSE stands at 21 crore, including those with multiple registrations across different trading members. This expansion is not confined to urban areas alone, with nearly 99.84% of Indian pin codes now represented among the exchange’s investors.
Maharashtra leads the country with the highest number of registered investors at 1.8 crore, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 1.2 crore and Gujarat at 98 lakh. These three states together account for 36.6% of the total 11 crore investors.
