Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu recently highlighted the need for economic policies that support family growth and address long-term demographic challenges. He shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), stressing the importance of maintaining demographic sustainability.
Vembu Concern: China's Demographic Decline
Vembu drew comparisons between China’s current demographic issues and Japan’s population decline in the 1990s. He noted that while China is advancing in technology, it faces a potential demographic crisis similar to Japan’s.
“Demographic decline, once it sets in motion, is hard to reverse,” he warned.
According to Vembu, rapid urbanization, lack of work-life balance, long commutes, and the erosion of traditional family structures are key factors contributing to demographic decline. He emphasized the difficulty of reversing this trend once it begins.
“…in an attempt at rapid catch up - massive urbanization, extreme lack of work life balance, long commutes, loss of traditional culture, loss of religious faith, rise of nuclear family - so demographic decline, once it sets in motion, is hard to reverse”, he wrote on post.
Vembu: Advocating for Traditional Culture
Vembu expressed his support for traditional culture and rural living, advocating for economic policies that promote family growth. He stated, “In the long term, nothing else really matters,” underscoring the importance of a pro-baby approach to economic development.
Vembu’s comments come amid growing concerns about declining fertility rates in India’s southern states. These rates have fallen below the replacement level of 2.1, raising alarms about aging populations and future demographic sustainability.
