'We Are Going To Keep Having Conversations....': Mexico Touts Friendly Relations With Trump

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum said on 28th November 2024, that she and President-elect of US, Donald Trump have agreed to maintain a good relationship over a friendly phone call. "It was a very friendly conversation," Sheinbaum added. "We agreed there would be a good relationship", Reuters reported.

Sheinbaum And Trump: Particulars Of The Conversation

"It was a good conversation and we are going to keep having conversations," Sheinbaum told a press conference, Reuters reported. Claudia also added that the two had not directly discussed tariffs. Instead they spoke about the reasons Trump gave for potentially implementing them, namely illegal migration and fentanyl trafficking.

Following Wednesday's call, Trump said on social-media platform 'Truth Social' that Sheinbaum had "agreed to stop migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border.", Reuters reported.

Claudia also took to X to announce the particulars of the conversation with Trump, "In our conversation with President Trump, I explained to him the comprehensive strategy that Mexico has followed to address the migration phenomenon, respecting human rights. Thanks to this, migrants and caravans are assisted before they reach the border. We reiterate that Mexico's position is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and between peoples." she wrote

What Did Claudia Say?

At the press conference, Claudia also said, "I can assure you we would never close the Mexico-U.S. border." Reuters reported. She also said that Mexico will retaliate if Trump imposes 25 per cent tariff on Mexican imports.
She also assured increased enforcement to curb illegal migration from Mexico to US. The Mexican authorities are attending to a caravan of 800 people in Chiapas state of Mexico. "This caravan is not going to reach the north," she said, as reported by Reuters.

Th Mexican Peso went up by one per cent after being weak in recent days.
