Sanjay Malhotra took charge as the 26th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for the next 3 years effective December 11, 2024.
Malhotra is scheduled to address the media later today at 3 p.m.
Who is Sanjay Malhotra?
Sanjay Malhotra, a seasoned Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1990 batch of the Rajasthan cadre, has been appointed as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), succeeding Shaktikanta Das.
Das completed his term as the 25th Governor on December 10, 2024, after taking office on December 12, 2018, following the sudden exit of Urjit Patel.
Before he was appointed RBI Governor, Malhotra served as the Revenue Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, where he played a key role in shaping important economic policies, particularly in the areas of taxation and fiscal reforms. His experience and expertise in financial governance have positioned him well to lead India's central bank during a crucial phase in its economic journey.
Das wishes to Malhotra
Das during his farewell press conference, extended his best wishes to Mahotra.
“From my side, all my best wishes to my successor for the 26th Governor of the Reserve Bank. Sanjay Malhotra is a person with vast experience, and I am sure he will do his best,” Das said. When asked if he had any “mantra” for Malhotra, Das added, “What I will tell Sanjay should remain between him and I.”
