Google has laid off 10% of its managers, including directors and vice-presidents, as part of a broader cost-cutting initiative. CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed the decision during an all-hands meeting, emphasizing the need to streamline operations amidst rising competition from AI-driven rivals like OpenAI.
This round of layoffs is part of a two-year restructuring strategy. While some managers were reassigned to individual contributor roles, others saw their positions eliminated. Google began its cost-cutting drive in 2022, aiming for 20% efficiency, which led to 12,000 job cuts last year.
Redefining ‘Googleyness’
Pichai unveiled a refreshed vision for ‘Googleyness,’ focusing on mission-driven work, innovation, risk-taking, and effective collaboration. The updated concept aims to align with Google’s evolving priorities and modern challenges.
Industry-Wide Job Cuts
Google’s restructuring reflects a larger trend in the tech industry. Economic pressures and rapid advancements in AI have pushed tech giants to reduce middle management and shift focus to individual contributors. In the first half of 2024 alone, over 98,000 employees from 333 tech companies were laid off.
Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and TikTok have also announced major layoffs. For instance, Microsoft cut over 1,000 jobs across divisions, while Amazon reduced staff across Audible, Prime Video, and Twitch, which lost 35% of its workforce.
The tech industry is facing a challenging phase of economic adjustment and AI-driven innovation. Google and its peers are reshaping their workforces to remain competitive and agile in this evolving landscape.
