Amazon is set to launch its quick commerce delivery service, codenamed Tez, by late December or early next year, as it enters the rapidly growing Indian market. This move aims to tap into a market that reached $5.5-6 billion in sales this month, driven by competitors like Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart.
Amazon Tez: Amazon’s Shift in Plans
Originally planning to launch Tez in 2025, Amazon has fast-tracked its timeline to compete in India’s fastest-growing e-commerce sector, where it currently has no presence. Quick commerce, known for ultra-fast delivery of groceries and essentials, is expected to grow quickly, and Tez will mark Amazon’s first global foray into this space.
Amazon is reportedly gearing up for the launch by recruiting talent and setting up logistics for Tez. The service will focus on groceries and daily essentials, with Amazon building dark stores and enhancing infrastructure to manage stock. The details are expected to be discussed at Amazon's monthly review in early December.
Amazon Tez: Competitors Ahead
As Amazon prepares to enter, competitors like Flipkart, Tata Neu, Zepto, and Blinkit are already expanding. Flipkart’s Minutes service and BigBasket’s quick-commerce shift are gaining momentum. Zepto recently raised $350 million, and Blinkit, owned by Zomato, is also scaling up, signaling a fiercely competitive market.
The quick commerce market in India could reach $25-55 billion by 2030, with high-frequency users driving much of the growth. It is expected to surpass food delivery in value by 2026, making it a critical area for e-commerce giants like Amazon to compete in.
