YouTube offers a wide range of parental control features that are aimed at making the platform safer for the kids. Today it announced a new feature that will give parents more control over the YouTube accounts of their teenage kids.
The video-streaming platform today announced a feature called 'Family Center Hub' for parents. The Family Center Hub settings will let parents supervise their kids' better by linking their own YouTube accounts with their kids' YouTube accounts.
"...we’re introducing a new supervised experience on YouTube that will give parents and teens the option to link their accounts and get shared insights and notifications," YouTube wrote in a blog post announcing these features. The company says that this updated supervised experience on YouTube is designed to keep parents informed about their teens' channel activity on the platform and help them provide advice on responsible content creation.
What are YouTube's new teen safety features?
As mentioned before, YouTube is introducing a Family Centre Hub for parents where parents and teenagers will be able to link their accounts.
In this Family Centre Hub, parents will get shared insights into their teens’ channel activity on YouTube. This will include details such as the number of uploads, their subscriptions and the comments that viewers have left on their kids' videos.
In addition to this, parents and their teenager kids will also receive email notifications when teens upload a video or start a live-stream on the platform. In a statement to TechCrunch YouTube revealed that parents will get a notification even if their teenager kids have uploaded a video on the platform that is private and unlisted. They will also get a notification if their kids change the video privacy settings in their accounts.
When will YouTube's new teen safety features be available?
As far as availability is concerned, YouTube says that it has already started rolling out the Family Centre Hub globally this week and that the feature will be available to users in the coming days.
