Brian Tompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare was, on Wednesday, fatally shot outside the New York Hilton Midtown Hotel. In what has been described by the New York Police Department (NYPD) as a targeted attack, the shooting reportedly took place ahead of an investor conference hosted by UnitedHealth Group. "It appears as though this was a targeted murder," Mayor Eric Adams was quoted as saying by Associated Press.

Thompson was rushed to a nearby hospital but could not be saved. Initially, the police had not released the name of the victim, but had issued a statement saying that a 50-year-old was shot around 6.45 am outside a Hilton before the shooter fled - AP reported.

Brian Thompson was named chief executive officer for UnitedHealthcare in April 2021.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Thompson served as chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare's government programs business including Medicare & Retirement, the largest business dedicated to the health and well-being needs of senior citizens and other Medicare beneficiaries; and Community & State, which serves Medicaid members in 31 states, plus Washington DC.

Prior to his stint with UnitedHealthcare, Brian Tompson was a manager with PwC.

A Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree holder from the University of Iowa, Thompson was a recipient of the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship for attaining the highest cumulative scholastic grade-point average at the University of Iowa, in 1997.

According to his professional profile, he was a Collegiate Scholar, Carver Scholar, State of Iowa Scholar, and Faculty Scholar.

He was also named outstanding accounting Junior and Senior by the University of Iowa and the Iowa Society of CPAs.
