A sessions court in Kolkata on Monday sentenced Sanjoy Roy, the culprit in RG Kar Medical College & Hospital rape and murder case to life imprisonment. In citing why no death penalty was awarded to Roy, the judge said that the matter did not fall in the ‘rarest of the rare’ case.
Justice Anirban Das of Sealdah Court said that his minimum sentence would be life imprisonment, though he could also face the death penalty. The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000 on the culprit.
The court also directed the state authorities to pay Rs 17 lakh to RG Kar doctor's family.
Roy was convicted under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He was found guilty of Section 64 (rape), Section 66 (causing injury leading to the victim's death), and Section 103(1) (murder).
Section 103(1) allows for either life imprisonment or the death penalty, while Section 66 mandates at least 20 years in prison, which may extend to life. Section 64 requires a minimum of 10 years, which can also extend to life imprisonment.
RG Kar Rape And Murder Case: What Is The Matter All About?
On the wee hours of August 9, 2024, a trainee doctor of RG Kar Medical College was brutally raped and murdered. This shocking incident erupted a country-wide protest with the High Court transferring the matter to the CBI, which filed its chargesheet before the sessions court.
The matter even got escalated to the Supreme Court, which took it up suo moto to frame guidelines for workplace safety of doctors and to monitor the investigation.
