The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will remain closed today i.e. January 9, to honor former President Jimmy Carter, following a long-standing Wall Street tradition of mourning national leaders.
This has been a long-standing Wall Street ritual for grieving the nation's leaders. President Carter, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 100 in Plains, Georgia, was remembered for his humanitarian work and leadership.
Both Nasdaq and NYSE observed a moment of silence on Monday and flew flags at half-staff during the mourning period.
Statements from Market Leaders
Nasdaq President Tal Cohen emphasized Carter’s dedication to improving lives, stating the closure honours his exemplary leadership and legacy. Similarly, NYSE Group President Lynn Martin highlighted Carter's humanitarian contributions and lifetime of service.
Nasdaq president Tal Cohen said in a statement that the exchange will close its trading on January 9 "to celebrate (Carter's) life and honour his legacy." He further stated that Carter "was an exemplary leader, one who tirelessly continued his efforts to improve the human condition even after his tenure in public office was complete.”
In a separate release, NYSE Group president Lynn Martin referred to Carter's "enduring legacy of humanitarianism" and stated that the exchange intended to honour his career of service.
National Day of Mourning Declared
President Joe Biden declared January 9 a National Day of Mourning, a tradition observed after the death of U.S. presidents. Wall Street has followed this custom for decades, closing trading in tribute to past leaders.
Historical Precedents
The NYSE first closed to honor a president in April 1865, following Abraham Lincoln's assassination. More recently, markets were shut on December 5, 2018, for George H.W. Bush’s passing. This closure for Carter continues Wall Street’s tradition of paying respects to late presidents.
