The once-mighty US and UK passports have taken a notable hit in the 2025 Henley Passport Index rankings. The US, now placed at the 9th position with visa-free access to 186 destinations, marks its lowest ranking in decades. Meanwhile, the UK has dropped to 5th place, granting visa-free entry to 190 destinations. Both countries have seen a steady decline in passport power, losing their former dominance to Asian and European nations.

Americans drive surge in second citizenship applications

This decline is not just a symbolic loss—it’s spurring real-world changes. An increasing number of Americans are actively seeking second citizenship. Data from global advisory firms indicates a sharp rise in applications for citizenship-by-investment programs, especially in countries offering strong passports like Malta, Portugal, and St. Kitts & Nevis.

The primary motivation

Greater global mobility, access to European Union benefits, and tax advantages. Experts believe this trend reflects growing concerns about the limitations of the US passport and shifting global perceptions about the ease of international travel for Americans.

Global leaders take the spotlight

While the US and UK falter, countries like Singapore and Japan continue to dominate. Singapore holds the top spot with visa-free access to 195 destinations, followed by Japan at 193. European nations like Germany, Italy, and Spain also maintain strong positions, offering a stark contrast to the downward trajectory of the Anglo-American powerhouses.

What lies ahead

The decline in passport rankings for the US and UK underscores the evolving geopolitical and travel dynamics post-pandemic. For Americans, the pursuit of a second citizenship may no longer be a luxury but a strategic move, reflecting a shifting understanding of global mobility and freedom.
