In his first direct response to the US Court allegations, Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group , on Saturday said that 'every attack' makes the group 'stronger'. Taking on the recent allegations surrounding his company Adani emphasised the importance of resilience, challenging the status quo, and embracing transformation. He was speaking at the 51st Gem and Jewellery Awards in Jaipur on Saturday.
Adani addressed the allegations made by the US regarding compliance practices at Adani Green Energy. He firmly rejected the claims, stating, “No one from the Adani side has been charged with any violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) or any conspiracy to obstruct justice.” He acknowledged the spread of negativity in today’s world, stressing that it often outpaces the truth, but reaffirmed his commitment to upholding world-class compliance standards.
"In today’s world, negativity spreads faster than the truth," he said,” But I want to affirm a commitment to world-class compliance.”
Adani highlighted his belief that challenges do not break you but rather define and strengthen you. “Every attack makes us stronger,” he stated, “and every obstacle becomes a stepping stone for a more resilient Adani Group.”
Gautam Adani on Short Selling
Reflecting on the challenges the Adani Group has faced in recent years, Adani drew parallels between his company’s journey and his personal experiences. He recalled the significant short-selling attack launched against the group in January 2023, just as the company was preparing to launch India’s largest-ever follow-on public offer (FPO). “It was not a typical financial strike,” Adani explained, “it was a double hit targeting our financial stability and pulling us into a political controversy.”
Despite these challenges, the Adani Group successfully raised Rs 20,000 crore and made the bold decision to return the proceeds, reinforcing the group’s resilience in the face of adversity.
Adani on the Dharavi Slum Redevelopment Project
Beyond the corporate battles, Adani shared his broader vision for change, particularly with his ambitious efforts in Dharavi, one of Mumbai’s largest slums. “For me, Dharavi is not just about slum redevelopment; it’s about restoring dignity, creating a sustainable ecosystem, and changing the status quo for one million people,” he said.
Adani on His Early Days
Adani also reflected on the early days of his journey, when he returned to Ahmedabad in 1981 to help his family with the polymer business amidst severe import controls. “The limits we face today are tomorrow’s starting points,” Adani remarked, reinforcing his conviction that every challenge is an opportunity for growth and progress. His message encouraged those present to reject complacency, “The bold your dreams, the more the world scrutinises you,” Adani said, “but it is in that scrutiny that you should find the courage to rise and challenge the status quo.”
