Nearly 98% Rs 2,000 banknotes returned; Rs 6,970 crore worth notes still with public
On May 19, 2023, the RBI announced the withdrawal of Rs 2000 denomination banknotes from circulation.

RBI on banktes: Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) on Monday said 98.04 per cent of Rs 2000 banktes have been returned to banking system, and only Rs 6,970 crore worth of such tes are still with public.
On May 19, 2023, RBI anunced withdrawal of Rs 2000 demination banktes from circulation.

total value of Rs 2000 banktes in circulation was Rs 3.56 lakh crore at close of business on May 19, 2023. It has declined to Rs 6,970 crore at close of business on October 31, 2024, RBI said.
"Thus, 98.04 per cent of Rs 2000 banktes in circulation as of May 19, 2023, has since been returned," it said in a statement.

facility for deposit and/or exchange of Rs 2000 banktes was available at all bank branches till October 7, 2023. However, this facility is still available at 19-issue offices of Reserve Bank.
From October 9, 2023, RBI issue offices are also accepting Rs 2000 banktes from individuals and entities for deposit into ir bank accounts.

Furr, members of public can also send Rs 2000 banktes through India Post from any post office within country to any of RBI issue offices for credit to ir bank accounts.
19 RBI offices depositing/exchanging banktes are in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Luckw, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.

Rs 2000 banktes were introduced in vember 2016, following demonetisation of n-prevailing Rs 1000 and Rs 500 banktes.
