Zomato: Rs 803 Crore Tax Demand? Deepinder Goyal's Company Responds
Zomato Limited has received a GST demand of Rs 401.7 crore for the period October 2019–March 2022.

Deepinder Goyal Led food delivery platform Zomato Limited has been hit with a Goods and Services Tax (GST) demand of Rs 401.7 crore, including a matching penalty, bringing the total liability to Rs 803.4 crore.
The adjudication order, passed on November 12, 2024, was issued by the Joint Commissioner of CGST & Central Excise, Thane Commissionerate, Maharashtra, for the period between October 2019 and March 2022.

‘this is to inform that the Company has received an order on 12 December 2024 which is dated 12 November 2024 for the period 29 October 2019 to 31 March 2022 passed by Joint Commissioner of CGST & Central Excise, Thane Commissionerate, Maharashtra confirming demand of GST of INR 401,70,14,706/- (Rupees four hundred and one crores seventy lakhs fourteen thousand seven hundred and six only) with interest as applicable and penalty of INR 401,70,14,706/- (Rupees four hundred and one crores seventy lakhs fourteen thousand seven hundred and six only),’ the company said in the exchange filing.
Also, the demand order has been received in respect of non-payment of GST on delivery charges with interest and penalty thereon.
Zomato Response
Zomato has expressed strong disagreement with the order. In its official statement, the company said, “We believe that we have a strong case on merits which is backed by opinions from our external legal and tax advisors.” The company plans to file an appeal with the appropriate authority, asserting that it has been compliant with all tax obligations during the relevant period.
