WhatsApp users can soon use filters in video calls on Android, iOS
WhatsApp is currently testing new augmented reality-based features that will allow you to put a photo filter in your video call, touch up your looks, and more.
WhatsApp video calls to improve: The Meta-owned chat app is reportedly working on new video calling features, akin to those in FaceTime and Google Meet. A report has suggested WhatsApp is testing augmented reality (AR) based features to enhance the video calling experience on both Android and iOS platforms. These features have been in testing for Android for some time, but the report mentioned that the app is now working on pushing them to the iPhone.
New AR features on WhatsApp
WhatsApp watchdog WABetaInfo has reported that at least three new features, based on AR, are in the works. The latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 24.17.10.74, available on TestFlight – Apple’s beta programme for operating systems, packs new call effects and filters. The screenshots in the report show you could change the way you look in a video call on the fly with new swipeable filters. While most filters will change the overall colour tone of your face, some of them could add extra elements to make you look more appealing on the video call. The option to choose the preset filters from also has a section where you will find different backgrounds. You can use a background from the list to personalise your video calls, such as blurring the background or changing to the one with a beach theme.
Better video calls
The report further mentioned that WhatsApp will also introduce a low-light mode to improve visibility in video calls. This could help when taking video calls in a place with dim light. The feature will not turn on by default. Instead, you will see a toggle to activate the low-light mode for your video calls. Another feature that will essentially improve your looks in a video call is touch-up mode. The report said this feature will smooth out your skin, remove blemishes, and add gloss to your overall look. You can consider this mode as another filter that works only on your face.
When are these tools coming?
WhatsApp new video call features, such as low-light mode, filters, and backgrounds, will be available on both Android and iOS. However, they are currently in the development and testing stage, so only beta users have access to them. The report mentioned that it is currently available to a handful of beta testers, but WhatsApp may widen the availability to more testers before finalising the rollout for everyone.
