WhatsApp is the most popular chatting app for a reason. Apart from its myriad features that enhance the chatting experience, the app also offers a great level of customisation that appeals to users who want more flexibility in how they want to communicate a message. One of these tools that let you customise the messages is text formatting. It lets you change the way your text messages look, meaning your messages can have text in bold, italics, and more styles that can help you convey your message more accurately without monotony.
If you have not used text formatting for your text messages on WhatsApp, here is a quick guide that will help you make the best of the chatting app.
Steps to format text in WhatsApp
– Open the chat of the person or the group you want to send the message to and tap on the text field.
– Start typing your message, preferably in English letters since other languages do not support text formatting properly.
– After you have typed your message, select the message or any part of it you want to customise.
– On Android, long tap the text to select it. Doing that will reveal pop-up options, including bold, italics, underline, among others. Choose the format you want and tap it to quickly convert your text’s format.
– iPhone users also need to select the message or a part of it by tapping it twice. Now, choose the ‘Format’ option from the overflow menu, followed by a tap on the preferred style for your text.
Alternatively, you can use a set of special characters (or symbols) for the text when typing it in a WhatsApp chat. The text associated with symbols will be automatically formatted accordingly. Here are the symbols you can use for different formatting styles:
- _text_ for italics
- *text* for bold
- ~text~ for underline
- ```text``` for monospace
- * text or - text for bullets
- > text for quotes
- `text` for inline codes
