Elon Musk voices support for California bill requiring safety tests on AI models

Bills on AI: Elon Musk the Chief of Tesla, who also owns social media platform X, has said that he feels California should pass an AI bill that would require tech companies and AI developers to conduct safety testing on some of their models which are self-developed.

"For over 20 years, I have been an advocate for AI regulation, just as we regulate any product/technology that is a potential risk to the public," Musk said in a post on X while calling on the state to pass the SB 1047 bill.

The legislators of California state have attempted to introduce 65 bills connecting AI this legislative season. According to the state’s legislative database, the measures that are included are to ensure all algorithmic decisions are established impartial and protect the intellectual property of deceased individuals from exploitation by AI companies. Many of the bills for this are already dead, as per the legislators.

Earlier in the day, Microsoft-backed OpenAI expressed support for another AI bill from California, AB 3211. This bill, AB 3211 would require all the tech companies that develop AI, to label all the content as AI-generated, which can range from harmless memes to deepfake images created by the AI technology, and also aimed at spreading misinformation about political candidates, especially during the election period. The deepfakes created through AI can be misleading and misuse of these deepfake images can hamper human life as well.

Countries that represent a third of the world's population will be having election polls this year. All the technology experts are concerned about the role AI-generated content will play. The AI-generated content has already been prominent in some elections, such as in Indonesia.
