It is worth noting that Apple is yet to make the news public. However, the company has reportedly asked the employees affected by the recent round of layoffs to find new jobs within 60 days before getting terminated.
Apple's changing priorities
The recent development highlights the company's shifting priorities amid the increasing focus on artificial intelligence and generative AI. For the unversed, Apple back at its annual developers' conference, the Worldwide Developers Conference or the WWDC 2024 had announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI. As a part of this partnership, Apple is planning to weave the company's gen AI-based capabilities into its products including Siri, iOS, iPadOS and MacOS. These features will be packaged under ‘Apple Intelligence’ and be offered to devices running the iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia when these operating systems become available in the fall this year.

Apple's expanding India footprint
Interestingly, the development comes a day after reports suggested that the iPhone-maker's increasing footprint in India is expected to create around six lakh jobs in the country by the end of the financial year 2025. Furthermore, an ET report suggests that the company and its suppliers will create around two lakh direct jobs in the country by March 2024. The report also says that Apple's supplier network in the country, which include companies like Foxconn and the Tata Group, have already generated around 84,000 jobs in the country so far.
