Ajay Bagga, a market veteran, spoke out on the continuing discussion over excessive work hours sparked by L&T CEO SN Subrahmanyan's statements calling for a 90-hour work week. Ajay Bagga clarified that the controversial remarks about long work hours may be taken out of context.
Ajay Bagga urged people to move beyond rigid notions of work week and focus on taking India ahead with work.
He explained that the statement, originally made during an internal meeting, was a rhetorical gesture and not meant to impose rigid expectations. Bagga urged people to understand the context before forming opinions and noted the significance of L&T as a company with 5 lakh employees and a market value of Rs 5 lakh crore.
Ajay Bagga: Lessons from Hard Work
Reflecting on personal stories, Bagga recounted how legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar exemplified dedication. He talked about how Tendulkar's coach would drive him on a scooter to matches, where he consistently practiced and played, sometimes batting in 10–12 matches a day. This relentless focus set him apart from others who lacked the same drive.
“Tendulkar continued his practice unlike a lot with him and others did not make it because they did not work hard. That's how champions are created. We are making a myth that working less will get us ahead” he said.
The Generation That Built Success
Bagga highlighted the hard work of his generation, which contributed to India’s development. He shared an anecdote about a reporter standing for three days in Delhi’s burning heat at Pandara Road to secure an interview under Advani’s entrance gate.
This perseverance and determination, he noted, were defining traits of a generation that experienced liberalization and worked tirelessly to create opportunities.
“We had few choices, and we were lucky to get big bang liberalisation; we got a lot going for us from the macro perspective. It was also a generation that worked very hard to see the development we have today,” he stated.
Ajay Bagga On Work Week: Women Face Greater Challenges
Bagga also acknowledged the theoretical truth behind women having it harder in professional settings. However, he believes progress requires a nuanced approach that considers different perspectives while striving for fairness and inclusivity.
A Call for Broader Understanding
Ajay Bagga concluded by urging people to move beyond rigid notions of work and success. He emphasized the importance of balance, perseverance, and appreciating the context behind decisions and statements, particularly when leading organizations like L&T.
