Salil Kapoor, the 65-year-old former president of Atlas Cycles, was found dead at his residence on Aurangzeb Lane, Lutyens' Delhi, on Tuesday afternoon in what is being treated as an apparent suicide.
Kapoor’s body was discovered on the ground floor of his three-storey home by family members, lying in a pool of blood near the puja room. He was immediately rushed to AIIMS, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival, according to a senior police official.
The local police were alerted and arrived at the scene with forensic experts to collect evidence, including fingerprints. A suicide note was reportedly recovered, in which Kapoor named four to five individuals who he alleged had been “physically, mentally, and telephonically” harassing him. Authorities are currently investigating the matter from "all possible angles."
Kapoor had faced legal troubles in the past. In 2015, he was arrested by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police in connection with two separate cheating cases amounting to Rs 9 crore. These cases were filed at the Defence Colony police station.
This incident comes just a few years after another tragedy struck the Kapoor family. In 2020, Kapoor’s sister-in-law, Natasha Kapoor, also died by suicide. She had returned from a wedding in Kolkata and left behind a note expressing her inability to continue living. Natasha’s husband, Sanjay Kapoor, served as a joint president of Atlas Cycles.
The investigation into Salil Kapoor's death is ongoing.
