Donald Trump's Government Proposes Bill Which Can Curb Birthright Citizenship
The senators said they want to curb the exploitative nature of birthright citizenship.

Republican senators Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz and Katie Britt, have introduced a bill in the US Senate which can restrict the children of illegal immigrants and non-immigrants from getting temporary visas.
Rationale Behind Restriction
The senators said they want to curb the exploitative nature of birthright citizenship. They also said that they are one of the 33 countries in the world which have no restrictions on birthright citizenship.
The legislative move comes after US President Donald Trump passed an executive order on the same matter. The order was later blocked by federal judge in Washington state.
The Center for Immigration Studies estimates that in 2023, there were 2,25,000 to 2,50,000 births to illegal immigrants, amounting to close to seven per cent of births in the US, PTI reported.
Senators Have A Take
Lindsey Graham said it is long overdue that the US change its policy on birthright citizenship.
One prominent example is birth tourism, wherein wealthy individuals come to the US to have a child who will then be an American citizen.
"The promise of American citizenship should not incentivise illegal migration, but that's exactly what has happened for far too long," said Britt.
She also emphasized that it is time we fix this.
"Senator Lindsey Graham's and my Birthright Citizenship Act would codify President Trump's commonsense stance and end the abuse of birthright citizenship that I do not believe is consistent with the original meaning of the 14th Amendment's Citizenship Clause, she added., PTI reported.
