Stock Market LIVE: Sensex Down 500 Pts, Nifty Below 23,600; TCS Q3 Results Today

The stock market witnessed a dip today as the Sensex closed at 77,620.21, down 528.28 points (-0.68%), and the Nifty settled at 23,526.50, losing 162.45 points (-0.69%). On the Nifty index, the top gainers were Bajaj Auto, Nestle India, Hindustan Unilever (HUL), Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), and Britannia. Meanwhile, ONGC, Shriram Finance, BPCL, Coal India, and Tata Steel emerged as the top losers. Similarly, the Sensex gainers included Nestle India, HUL, M&M, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and ITC, while Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, L&T, NTPC, and Reliance were the key laggards.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has successful commissioning of two units of the 6x170 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project (PHEP-II). Executed as part of a bilateral agreement between the Government of India and the Royal Government of Bhutan, PHEP-II is a greenfield hydro project located in the Wangdue district of Western Bhutan.

Indian Stock market opened lower today, with Nifty below 23,700 and Sensex at 78,206.21

Benchmark indices traded higher in the pre-opening session. The Sensex rose 269.66 points or 0.35% to 78,418.15, while the Nifty gained 9.75 points or 0.04% to 23,698.70.

The Indian rupee opened at a new record low of 85.89 per dollar on Thursday, slightly down from its previous close of 85.85.

Tech Giant Infosys announced the Q3 FY 2025 results date and time. Infosys will be declaring its quarterly results for the Quarter ending December 31, 2024, on January 16, 2025.

The rupee depreciated 9 paise to hit its record low of 85.83 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday

A meeting of the Board of Directors of Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025. The meeting will be held to "Approve and take on record the Consolidated and Standalone Unaudited Financial Results of the Bank for the quarter and nine months ended December 31, 2024, along with the limited review report.” the filing said.

Aditya Birla Led - Novelis Inc announced that its indirect wholly owned subsidiary, Novelis Corporation, has priced an offering of $750 million aggregate principal amount of 6.875% senior notes due in January 2030 (the "Notes"), which represents an increase of $250 million from the offering size previously announced. 

GIFT Nifty on the NSE IX traded down by 32 points, or 0.13%, at 23,723, suggesting a negative start for Dalal Street on Thursday.

Asia-Pacific markets saw mixed performance on Thursday as inflation concerns fueled worries about delayed Federal Reserve policy easing, while China’s persistently weak consumer and producer price data weighed on sentiment. Major indexes in Japan and Australia posted declines, while South Korea’s Kospi managed a slight gain despite volatility. Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s market edged up modestly, contrasting with losses in mainland Chinese stocks.
 

The S&P 500 ended slightly higher on Wednesday, while the Dow Jones outperformed with modest gains, and the Nasdaq dipped marginally. Concerns grew after the Federal Reserve’s December meeting minutes suggested limited scope for rate cuts this year due to persistent inflation risks. Among stocks, Palantir, a top performer this year, continued its decline for the third consecutive session, while a leading chipmaker slid after receiving a downgrade from a major financial institution.

The Indian stock market closed flat on Wednesday after a highly volatile session. The Sensex slipped 54.29 points (-0.07%) to end at 78,144.82, while the Nifty lost 32.40 points (-0.14%) to settle at 23,675.50. Intraday, the Sensex plunged over 700 points, and the Nifty dipped below 23,600 before recovering to near-opening levels. ONGC, ITC, Asian Paints, Reliance, and TCS emerged as the top gainers, while Apollo Hospitals, Trent, Adani Ports, Bajaj Auto, and BEL led the declines. Gains on the Sensex were driven by ITC, Asian Paints, TCS, Reliance, and HCL Tech, while Adani Ports, Zomato, L&T, and Sun Pharma dragged the index lower.
