WhatsApp To End Support For These Phones From January 1 - Check Details
WhatsApp to End Support for Older Devices Starting January 2025.
WhatsApp has announced it will stop supporting Android devices running KitKat OS or older versions from January 1, 2025. This decision primarily affects phones released 9 to 10 years ago. Meanwhile, iPhone users have until May 2025 to update their devices or operating systems to continue using the app.
WhatsApp Phasing Out: Reasons
Meta, WhatsApp's parent company, stated that discontinuing support for older operating systems ensures enhanced security and functionality. Older devices cannot support new features or effectively protect sensitive data.
Without security updates, these devices are increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks, prompting Meta to prioritize newer systems capable of running updated software.
Whatsapp Phaseout: Affected Devices
From January 2025, the following popular Android phones will no longer support WhatsApp:
- Samsung Galaxy S3
- Motorola Moto G (1st Gen)
- HTC One X & HTC One X+
- Sony Xperia Z
- LG Optimus G
- LG Nexus 4
- Sony Xperia T, V, and SP
For iPhone users, devices running iOS 15.1 or lower—including the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus—will lose WhatsApp support after May 5, 2025.
Meta’s Commitment to Security
This step aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to keep WhatsApp secure, efficient, and compatible with modern technologies.
As the app evolves, older devices are unable to handle advanced features, leading WhatsApp to phase out support for outdated systems periodically.
Affected users are encouraged to upgrade their devices or update their operating systems to ensure uninterrupted access to WhatsApp's features.
