Vi awards Ericsson with new 4G, 5G contracts to upgrade network

Vi (formerly Vodafone Idea) has strengthened its collaboration with telecom equipment maker Ericsson by granting it a new contract for 5G expansion throughout India. Ericsson will roll out 5G in the Indian telecom circles it currently serves for Vi, along with enhancing the 4G network in a joint effort that will enable the rapid deployment of a “world-class” 5G network, according to the company.

Ericsson has bagged contracts to deploy 5G and upgrade 4G in Delhi-NCR, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan circles. The company said the renewed collaboration will allow it to increase “its footprint and market share with Vi substantially.” According to Andres Vicente, Head of Ericsson’s Market Area Southeast Asia, Oceania, and India, the company “aims to empower Vi to deliver, fast, reliable, and scalable 5G services for its customers” using its advanced network technology.

As part of the contract, Ericsson will roll out energy-efficient and lightweight Ericsson Radio System products, like mid-band Massive MIMO antenna-integrated radios for “best-in-class” network performance on Vi’s pan-India network.

“Ericsson’s energy-efficient 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) products and solutions from the Ericsson Radio System portfolio will be deployed in the 4G and 5G network for Vi. All products and solutions are designed to maximise the network performance and benefit of 4G and 5G for our end customers and enterprises in India,” said Jagbir Singh, CTO of Vi.

Vi is also likely to forge a partnership with Samsung for network upgradation in at least three circles. The telecom operator’s deals with Ericsson and Samsung are worth roughly Rs 16,500 crore. Vi is also in the final stages of its talks with Nokia, sources said, to boost its network capacities as it seeks to prepare for the increase in the customer base after its 5G services are live.

“5G deployment will enable us to seamlessly manage the growing data traffic on the Vi network, provide secure and reliable connectivity while enhancing the customer experience from the network,” said Akshaya Moondra, CEO of Vi.
