Qualcomm lay offs: Chipmaker Qualcomm is set to lay off over 200 workers in United States later this year. According to a notice posted by Qualcomm on California's WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) Act, the company will lay off at least 226 employees from San Diego this year and that these lay offs will come into effect on November 12, 2024.

As per media reports, the lay offs will affect employees at all 16 Qualcomm facilities in San Diego including the company's headquarters. The lay offs are also likely to affect the company's cybersecurity team, which sits at its headquarters in San Diego. However, the chipmaker hasn't confirmed all the departments that will be affected by the lay offs.

"As part of a normal course of business, we prioritize and align our investments, resources, and talent to ensure we are optimally positioned to take advantage of the unprecedented diversification opportunities in front of us," Qualcomm said in a statement to TechCrunch.

Qualcomm lay offs in the past

It is worth noting that this is not the first time that Qualcomm has laid off employees in the recent time. The company laid off over 1,200 workers from across the company last year as a part of its broader cost cutting measure. Prior to that, the company had cut around 153 jobs from its office in San Diego in 2022.

More tech lay offs in 2024

It is worth noting that Qualcomm is not the only tech company that has decided to lay off employees in the recent time. Earlier this month, Microsoft laid off around 650 employees from its gaming division. The company had announced that it would lay off arouund 1,900 employees from its gaming division back in January this year. These lay offs follow Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

More recently, Cisco announced its second round of lay offs earlier this week. The company cut around 5,600 jobs representing around sevent percent of its workforce. The company had reduced its headcount by 4,000 in February this year.

Similarly, Apple cut around 100 jobs from its digital services group in August this year. The move affect employees in its Books and News teams.
