Samsung has emerged as the best-seller in India’s tablet market for the second quarter of 2024, according to a new report from the International Data Corporation. With a record shipment of 901,000 units, the South Korean secured a 48.7 per cent share – more than five times the market share of close rival, Apple, which shipped around 176,000 iPad units during the quarter.

Securing the second position on the list, Acer Group shipped around 437,000 units in the second quarter, representing a market share of 23.6 per cent. Apple ranked third with a 9.5 per cent share, while Lenovo and Xiaomi stood fourth and fifth on the chart. With 6.9 per cent and 4.7 per cent market share, the two Chinese firms rolled out 127,000 and 87,000 shipments, respectively.

According to the IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker, Samsung’s involvement in public sector education initiatives, such as that of the Uttar Pradesh government, helped it boost tablet sales in India. The company achieved a 200.4 per cent year-on-year growth. Similarly, Acer Group’s second-highest tablet shipments piggybacked on the demand for affordable tablets in the government-sponsored digital education sector. However, the Acer Group outperformed even Samsung in terms of YoY growth with a whopping 1548.4 per cent spike in sales.

Apple’s third position represents a 9.8 per cent YoY growth, driven by demand for new iPad models and price adjustments on the older models. The iPhone maker renewed its iPad portfolio earlier this year and is now gearing up to launch its flagship iPhone models on September 9 in India.

India’s overall tablet market saw an uptick in shipments, the data revealed. Brands shipped a total of 1.84 million units in the second quarter, demonstrating a YoY increase of 128.8 per cent. The shipment of slate tablets jumped 178.1 per cent YoY, while the detachable tablet shipments increased by 23.6 per cent YoY.
