Apple to launch smallest ever Mac mini featuring M4 chips: Report
The upcoming Mac mini redesign will be part of a broader refresh across Apple’s Mac lineup, featuring the AI-centric M4 processors.
Apple Mac Mini: Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce its most significant redesign of the Mac mini since 2010, potentially announcing the smallest desktop computer in the company's history. According to Bloomberg’s Apple Analyst Mark Gurman, the new Mac mini will be dramatically reduced in size, comparable to an Apple TV set-top box.
The upcoming Mac mini redesign will be part of a broader refresh across Apple’s Mac lineup, featuring the AI-centric M4 processors. These next-generation chips, which are also expected to power the new iMac desktops, MacBook Pros, and possibly MacBook Airs and Mac Pro models, mark a significant shift as Apple standardises its chip technology across all Mac products for the first time. The M4 processors, already in use in the iPad Pro, are designed to enhance artificial intelligence capabilities.
What is Apple Mac mini?
The Mac mini is a compact desktop computer developed by Apple. Introduced in 2005, it serves as a versatile and affordable entry point into the Mac ecosystem. Unlike other Macs, the Mac mini comes without a built-in display, keyboard, or mouse, allowing users to pair it with their own peripherals.
Despite its small size, it packs powerful hardware, making it suitable for tasks ranging from everyday computing to more demanding applications like software development and media creation. The Mac mini has gained popularity for its performance, energy efficiency, and ability to fit seamlessly into various setups.
Better memory, higher graphic performance
Apple has reportedly tested versions of the new Mac mini equipped with multiple USB-C ports, an HDMI port, and a power cable connection. The updated mini will be available in two versions: a base model with the standard M4 chip and a higher-end variant featuring the M4 Pro chip, offering increased memory and graphics performance.
The overhaul of Apple's Mac lineup, starting with the introduction of the M4 chips, will begin in late 2024 and continue into early 2025. The 24-inch iMac will be among the first to receive the M4 chip, which is expected to boost AI performance with an enhanced Neural Engine.
The MacBook Pro lineup will also be refreshed, with the entry-level 14-inch model getting the M4 chip, while the higher-end 14-inch and 16-inch models will feature the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips. The Mac mini will be updated to offer both M4 and M4 Pro options, aligning with the new MacBook Pro releases.
