The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) today announced that it is simplifying FASTag payments in India. As a part of the process, the organisation will soon be enabling FASTag payments using mobile numbers.

"Another leading innovation from the stable of NPCI! Experience the power of simplicity and keep moving forward with simplified FASTAG payments using just the mobile number," NPCI wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter) announcing the news. The announcement was made on the sidelines of the Global Fintech Fest 2024 or the GFF 2024 that is being hosted by NPCI from August 28 to August 30 in Mumbai.

How will this benefit commuters?

While the scope of impact of NPCI's latest announcement remains unclear for now, the development is likely to changes to make FASTag payments easier and faster.

What else was announced at Global Fintech Fest 2024?

That said, mobile number-enabled FASTag are not the only major announcement that NPCI made at the GFF 2024 today. Besides this, the organisation also showcased special machines that will dispense NCMC cards for the commuters. “Now get your NCMC cards on the spot via auto-dispensing machines with Zero KYC,” NPCI wrote in a separate post on X.

For the unversed, NCMC stands for the National Common Mobility Card. These cards enable commuters to use their existing debit or credit cards for making payments for metro, bus, suburban railways, toll, parking, smart city and retail among others.
