Meta to inform Brazilian users about AI data usage
In July, ANPD halted Meta's AI data privacy policy, but reversed it last Friday after Meta agreed to provide disclosures.
Meta AI data disclosure: Meta Platforms Inc. has announced that it will disclose to Brazilian users how their personal data is used to train generative artificial intelligence (AI).
ANPD mandates data disclosures
This follows a directive from Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD). Starting Tuesday, Brazilian users will receive notifications via email and through Facebook and Instagram, detailing how their data may be used for AI training and offering them the option to opt out.
In July, ANPD had halted Meta's updated privacy policy concerning AI data usage. However, last Friday, ANPD reversed this decision after Meta agreed to provide the necessary disclosures.
AI tools suspended in Brazil
Meta had previously suspended the use of generative AI tools in Brazil, including popular AI-driven stickers for WhatsApp, a platform with Brazil as its second-largest user base. This suspension was part of Meta's plan to address ANPD's concerns about its AI practices.
When asked if Meta plans to resume these tools now that the suspension has been lifted, the company reiterated that the suspension was a temporary measure during discussions with ANPD.
