Are you someone who uses Snapchat or Bumble? Then there is a news and warning together for you. Yes, a big scam has been detected by Delhi police by a 23-year-old man, Tushar Bisht who has duped over 700 women by posing himself as a US-based freelance model. Bisht was using fake identities to win the trust of victims and later on used to blackmail them with private images and videos, and extort money.

Fake Identities and Manipulation of Victims

According to Delhi Police, Bisht assumed the identity of a US-based model using Brazilian women's photos. "Posing as a US-based freelance model, the accused created fake identities using a virtual international mobile number and photographs of a Brazilian model," Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vichitra Veer said. He would target women in the age bracket of 18-30 years, have a conversation with them, gain their trust, and then convince them to share intimate content.

Blackmail and Extortion Tactics

After the accused had obtained the private images or videos, he used blackmail tactics, threatening to leak the material online or sell it on the dark web unless the victims paid him. "Once he obtained the content, he resorted to blackmail, threatening to leak the sensitive material online, or sell them to the dark web unless the victims paid him," said the DCP.

The initial investigation revealed that Bisht was in touch with over 500 women on Bumble and 200 more on Snapchat and WhatsApp. The mobile phone had enough evidence, including objectionable material and financial transactions details. The police also recovered 13 credit cards belonging to different banks.

Complaint from Victim Results in Arrest

The case came to light on December 13 when a Delhi University student filed a complaint after Bisht blackmailed her with a private video she had shared. Despite making initial payments, the victim's persistent demands for money prompted her to report the crime to her family and the authorities.

Modus Operandi and Arrest

Bisht admitted that he had operated a virtual international mobile number for more than two years, through an application. He had utilized the number for creating fake profiles on dating applications, which at the start he did for entertainment, but subsequently in a planned extortion racket. The police traced Bisht to Shakarpur in East Delhi and caught him after carrying out a search operation.

Background of Bisht

Bisht comes from a middle-class family background in Shakarpur. His father is a private driver, and his mother is a homemaker. He was working as a technical recruiter at a private firm in Noida. He had a BBA degree. The police have also traced two bank accounts belonging to Bisht. In one of them, multiple transactions have been traced from the victims. Investigations in the second account are underway.
