WhatsApp Status update: Meta-owned WhatsApp has announced new features coming to its Android and iOS apps soon. The company today announced a feature called Private Mentions that enables users to tag their friends and family members in their status updates, just like they tag their friends and followers in their posts on Instagram.

“Make sure those closest to you see your status, and let them reshare it easily with their audience, by privately mentioning them. Those you mention will be notified privately, and the mention won’t be shown on your status,” the company wrote in a blog post.

According to the details shared by the company in a support page, users can mention up to five people in a status update. All the people who are mentioned in a status update get a message from the person who shared the status informing them that they have been mentioned in a status along with the link to the status. The company also said that none of the other users mentioned in a WhatsApp Status will see the names of others mentioned in the post and that all the people will be notified by the company separately.

The company also clarified that WhatsApp users can mention up to five people in their status updates.

Additionally, WhatsApp is rolling out the ability to reshare a status in which a user has been mentioned. This feature works in a way that is similar to how users reshare Stories in which they have been mentioned in on Instagram. The company said that users can also make changes to the status before resharing it on their status.

Lastly, the company is bringing the ability to like a status update in its messaging app. Up until now, WhatsApp users could either comment on a status or share a reaction from the company's vast library of emojis. However, users could not like a status, as it is possible to do in Instagram. However, WhatsApp's latest update changes that as it brings the ability to like a status update.

"Status likes are private and don’t have a counter, so only the person whose status you liked can see them as a [green heart] in the list of viewers," WhatsApp wrote in its post.
