US Birthright Citizenship To End? What Donald Trump Has Said
According to experts, this order is expected to encourage Indians to return and invest in real estate back home rather than in the United States.
Donald Trump , the President of the United States, who has recently assumed office, has signed an executive order to end automatic birthright citizenship for children of non-permanent residents.
According to experts, this order is expected to encourage Indians to return and invest in real estate back home rather than in the United States.
This policy shift, will in all likelihood, encourage Indians to go to the US to earn money but eventually they may come back to India and settle here, he added.
US: Just Another Middle Eastern Country
For new H1-B holders, the United States will be like just another Middle Eastern country, where one goes to earn only to come back to their native countries eventually. This policy shift will have a significant impact.
What Does The Order Say?
According to the executive order, children born in the US will no longer be recognised as citizens, in case their father is not a US citizen or a permanent resident and their mother is either an immigrant with a temporary visa, such as a work visa or a tourist visa or in the country illegally.
The executive order revokes the automatic citizenship granted to children born to parents who are on temporary work visas (like H1-B) or those awaiting green cards.
When Will The Change Take Effect?
This change comes into place in 30 days, and targets automatic citizenship for children of parents unlawfully or temporarily residing in the country.
As a response, certain immigration advocates along with the American Civil Liberties Union have filed a lawsuit on January 20.
