Mumbai Boat Accident: Parents Thought Of 'Tossing' Children In Sea? Report
The rescue operation, performed outside the CISF's official jurisdiction, has been hailed for its professionalism and dedication.
On December 18, a tourist ferry, 'Neel Kamal,' sank off the Mumbai coast after colliding with a Navy boat en route to Elephanta Island. Panic spread as parents considered throwing their children into the sea to save them. A team of CISF marine commandos, led by Constable Amol Savant, arrived just in time to prevent such desperate measures and assured passengers of their rescue.
Swift Response in the Golden Hour
The CISF patrol boat, on a routine mission, rushed to the site after receiving an alert. Utilizing the critical “golden hour,” the team prioritized rescuing the most vulnerable, including children. "We saved 6-7 children first, followed by women and men," said Savant. Overall, they rescued 50-60 passengers from the sinking ferry.
Courage Under Pressure
Upon reaching the accident site, the rescuers were shaken by the chaotic scene but acted decisively. Children were hanging precariously, and parents were panicking. Savant and his colleagues took control, moving passengers to safety. Meanwhile, SI Kheioka Sema and his team assisted in rescuing individuals from the water, providing CPR to 10-12 victims to revive them.
Collaboration and Training
The team’s success was a result of their specialized training in marine commando operations, combat, and amphibious survival techniques. The CISF personnel also received help from a foreigner couple onboard, who administered CPR to several victims.
Recognition and Beyond
The rescue operation, performed outside the CISF's official jurisdiction, has been hailed for its professionalism and dedication. The CISF plans to recommend the personnel involved for the 'Jeevan Raksha Padak' (Life Saving Medal) and honor them with the highest recognition in their service records.
This incident highlights the bravery and commitment of the CISF personnel, whose prompt actions saved countless lives during a tragic maritime accident. Their courage under pressure serves as an inspiring reminder of the importance of well-trained first responders.
