Manmohan Singh Memorial: Govt Clarifies On Allocating Space
Known for his transformative economic reforms, Dr. Singh retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year after 33 years of service.
According to the ministry of home affairs, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and his family have been informed that the government has chosen to set aside space for a memorial to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who died on Thursday night.
"Today morning, Government received a request to allocate space for a memorial for former Prime Minister Late Dr Manmohan Singh, from the Congress Party President”, shared in the letter.
On this request, “Home Minister M Shri Amit Shah communicated to Congress President Shri Kharge and the family of Late Dr Manmohan Singh that the Government will allocate space for the memorial. In the meanwhile cremation and other formalities can happen because a trust has to be formed and space has to be allocated to it," the letter informed.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, Congress chairman Mallikarjun Kharge demanded that the Centre hold former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's funeral in a location where a memorial might be built.
"Coming from a humble background and having experienced the pains and sufferings of the Partition, it is through his sheer grit and determination that he rose to become one of the leading statesmen of the world. I hope and trust that befitting stature of Dr Manmohan Singh, request to have the funeral of Dr Singh at a place where his memorial can be built, will be acceded," Mallikarjun Kharge said in his letter to Modi.
Last Rites
Known for his transformative economic reforms, Dr. Singh retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year after 33 years of service. Leaders from across the political spectrum, including Priyanka Gandhi, paid their respects.
