Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district on December 25 to launch the Ken-Betwa River Link Project. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav emphasized that this project will transform the Bundelkhand region by providing water for irrigation, drinking, and industrial purposes.

A Vision of Cooperation and Development
The Ken-Betwa project is a collaborative effort between the Central Government, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. It fulfils the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's vision of river linking, which PM Modi initiated. This multipurpose project aims to boost agriculture, tourism, employment, and groundwater levels in the drought-prone Bundelkhand region.

Ken- Betwa Project: Largest Irrigation Project

The Ken-Betwa project features India's largest irrigation system, which uses underground pressurized pipes. Key highlights include:

  • Daudhan Dam: A 77-meter-high, 2.13-kilometer-long dam on the Ken River in Panna Tiger Reserve.
  • Water Transfer: Surplus water from Ken River will flow to the Betwa River via a 221-kilometer-long canal.
  • Irrigation Coverage: It will irrigate 8.11 lakh hectares across 2,000 villages in 10 districts, benefiting 7 lakh farming families.

Drinking Water and Renewable Energy

The project will supply drinking water to 44 lakh people in Madhya Pradesh and 21 lakh in Uttar Pradesh. It will also generate 103 MW of hydropower and 27 MW of solar energy, ensuring sustainable development for the region.

Revival of Historical Heritage

A unique feature of the project is the restoration of 42 Chandela-era ponds in Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, and Niwari districts. These ponds will store rainwater, boosting groundwater levels and benefiting rural communities.

Prosperity for Bundelkhand

The Ken-Betwa project promises improved crop production through advanced irrigation, ending the region's water crisis, and reducing migration for jobs. The initiative is poised to bring prosperity and happiness to Bundelkhand’s farmers and residents.
