Canadian Prime Minister Justin trudeau while addressing the press on Monday tendered his resignation and said that he is not the best option for the next election.

Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that he intends to step down as leader of the  ruling Liberals after nine years in office, but assured that he will stay in the position as long as a replacement is not chosen.

Trudeau said that he will resign ‘as party leader, as prime minister’ after the new party leader is chosen.

Reportedly, this is due to heavy pressure from Liberal legislators that he has decided to quit amid polls illustrating the party’s imminent forfeit in the upcoming elections.

The Canadian parliament will be suspended up until March which means that Trudeau will still be the Canadian Prime Minister when President-elect Donald Trump takes office on January 20, 2025.

Earlier Trump had threatened to impose trade tariffs that would cripple the economy of Canada.

Trudeau has been under pressure to resign for a long time but lately the pressure escalated when Chrystia Freeland, his finance minister, quit on December 16, citing their differences at a policy level.

Trudeau had disappeared from public view ever since Freeland had posted her resignation.

His career as Prime Minister of Canada is littered with scandals and controversies ever since he came into power in November 2015.
